San Marcos Studio Tour 2024

The San Marcos Studio Tour hosted by MotherShip Studios is an annual event where residents of the great San Marcos area open the doors to their personal spaces to invite the community in and experience their craft. In 2024, I participated with a focus on retrospection and interaction.

Gallery

The tour kicked off with a gallery showcasing works from participating artists. I often feel I’m at a crossroads of having not fully explored showcasing past work and eager to move on to the next project to live in the creation process. For my gallery piece, I off loaded a lot of pieces into a collage. The cheap frame from a thrift store reminded me of the one my parents have in their bedroom showing family members. This medium felt appropriate to share the older work through a nostalgic frame.

Interactive Exhibit

For my studio exhibit, I created an interactive piece for visitors to experience my work from start to finish while blending the old with the new. I developed a three-sided structure in my yard to serve the interaction. Visitors arrived and where invited to have their photo taken on side one. On side two of the structure they would read an artist statement that invited visitors to riffle through my old work that was printed out and select one to add to the gallery wall on the final side. The statement they read also remarked that the old work was inferior to my latest work which they would soon see. After making their selection of my old work to contribute to my own gallery wall, visitors found the third side where a screen showed the “latest work” which was the portrait of them we had just taken moments before. They taped their selected old work to the gallery wall creating a living collage where they were the most beautiful part.

End result of the living collage.
